What is a blue tape walkthrough?
A blue tape walkthrough happens near the end of construction — typically 5-7 days before closing — when you and a builder rep walk the home room by room, marking anything unfinished or damaged with blue painter's tape, which won't damage fresh finishes the way regular tape can.
Every taped item goes on the builder's punch list to fix before you move in. It mostly catches cosmetic and finish-stage issues — paint, doors, fixtures, appliances. It's not a substitute for a licensed independent inspector, who can catch structural, electrical, or HVAC issues hidden behind the walls.
What to bring
- Blue painter's tape (bring extra)
- Phone or camera for photos
- This checklist on your phone, or printed with a pen
- Flashlight for closets and dim spots
- Charger to test outlets
- Toilet paper, to test every flush
- A small level (or a level app on your phone)
- Comfortable shoes — plan 1.5-3 hrs
How to do it well
- Start the dishwasher and a wash cycle first — check for leaks once they finish
- Go slow, room by room
- Tape flaws immediately, then photograph
- Test everything — faucets, toilets, windows, doors
- Get a copy of the punch list before you leave
- Confirm a re-walk date
- Keep photos/notes until the final walkthrough

Common questions about blue tape walkthroughs
What is a blue tape walkthrough?
A walkthrough of your newly built home, usually 5-7 days before closing, where you mark flaws — scuffed paint, sticking doors, loose fixtures — with blue painter's tape. The builder fixes everything flagged before a final walkthrough confirms it's resolved.
When does the blue tape walkthrough happen?
Typically 5-7 days before closing, once the builder considers the home substantially complete — leaving time to fix flagged items before you close, and before a separate final walkthrough 24-48 hours out.
What should I bring to a blue tape walkthrough?
Blue painter's tape (not regular tape), a phone or camera to photograph flagged items, a flashlight, a charger to test outlets, toilet paper to test every flush, a small level, and this checklist on your phone or printed.
What items do builders usually fix after a blue tape walkthrough?
Cosmetic and finish-stage issues: paint touch-ups, chipped surfaces, sticking doors, misaligned cabinets, grout, loose fixtures, and appliances or outlets not yet working. These go on the punch list to fix before closing.
Is a blue tape walkthrough the same as a home inspection?
No. It's a visual, cosmetic-level check — not a substitute for hiring your own licensed inspector, who can catch structural, electrical, or HVAC issues hidden behind finishes.
